Cannot Delete GL Batches

We are trying to delete some incorrect batches from our General Ledger, but the system is not allowing us to do so. Why?

Due to the checks and balances built in to the system, you are not able to delete posted batches from the General Ledger. To correct the incorrect information, enter reversing General Journal Entries.
